Why Jewelry?
I've always loved stones, starting with a (huge) chunk of pink quartz I collected from some random trip as a child. I particularly love stones that have depths and dimension to them, especially when their complexities become revealed in the sunlight. I can get lost in them.
I think this is why I enjoy making jewelry with the most interesting stones I can find. I like to work with natural stone as much as I can, and I enjoy wire wrapping them sometimes and putting them in colorful combinations. Below are a few of the forms I enjoy most and I'm always experimenting with new designs, color combos and materials. I enjoy the exploration almost more than the output and I'm always learning. If you make or know similar work, I hope you'll share it with me so I can learn from you as well.
Necklaces - I usually make necklaces in 22 or 38 inch lengths so that they can wrap for 3-time-around bracelets or 5-times-around or double strand necklaces.
Dragon Eye Necklace & Earrings was one of my first really creative designs, a 23 inch necklace meant to be worn also as a bracelet. I made it at the encouragement of a tricksy muse I have from the Isles and who likes to play in dragon form sometimes. I saw the hollow silver shapes at a bead store and had no idea what to do with them, but was intrigued. A friend bought the jasper beads and asked me to get creative, so my dragon muse took over and built himself into the necklace. We added little green and copper seed beads interspersed with tiny green-yellow faceted topaz rondells. He knew she liked things not in perfect balance, so we made his eyes (the earrings) just a little different each. All three of us were delighted.
Earrings - They are my favorite as you'll see when you visit my shop. I personally wear earrings more than any other jewelry and have fun playing with different styles when my hair is up or down. I finally started getting creative with jewelry when I stopped trying to make earrings I would wear and just made them pretty, figuring someone might like them. I was right!
Dragon Drop Earrings came soon after the neckace above. My dragon-friendly muse fell in love with the mossy green agate round beads that seemed to have no end to their depths. We were entranced at how the deep red carnelian rounds and rondells enriched the green and reminded us of dragon's blood. My muse was so amused, he wrote me this as I contemplated them after a friend commented that they reminded her of : Never miss the chance to play in a forest glade because you never know
what you'll find. A fairy's face reflected in a pool, something timid
beneath a tree root, or, if you're very lucky, just a dot of dragon's
blood, sure to wink away the moment you blink your eye. I was so happy with these I made them for all my friends and even have some more left over for sale!
Like the Dragon Drops?
Key Fobs and Window Hangings - Sometimes I just like stringing pretty stones and beads together and so I make zipper pulls and key chains which are light weight and fun. They always make me smile when I fish them out of my purse.
SImilarly, window hangings make me happy and I have convinced myself that they keep the house happy too;)
I'm always playing with new designs and when they result from interesting mental processes, I usually catalog them on my blog. To see the latest for sale, visit my Etsy store, or check out some of my fave designs on the StoneTosser Facebook Fan page. Feel free to make a request!
